In the STEP 1 trial of 1,961 adults without diabetes, semaglutide 2.4 mg led to a 14.9% average weight loss over 68 weeks, compared with 2.4% on placebo. Everyone also received lifestyle support.
In SELECT, adults with heart disease and overweight or obesity, but no diabetes, had fewer major cardiovascular events on semaglutide 2.4 mg (6.5% vs 8.0%) over about 40 months.
In the STEP 1 follow-up, people who stopped treatment regained on average 11.6 percentage points of the 17.3% they had lost within a year.
These are trial averages. Many people lose less, and side effects lead some to stop. Results are never guaranteed.

Semaglutide can help some people, and it carries real risks.
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and constipation are common, especially early on or when the dose goes up.
Pancreatitis, gallbladder problems and dehydration can occur. If you take insulin or diabetes pills, your blood sugar may drop.
In animal studies, semaglutide caused thyroid C-cell tumors. It is not known whether it does in people. It should not be used with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN 2.
The FDA says compounded drugs are not FDA-approved. Never buy from sources that skip screening or send medicine that looks different than expected.

Semaglutide is the active ingredient in both Ozempic and Wegovy. Ozempic is approved for type 2 diabetes and Wegovy is approved for chronic weight management. Compounded semaglutide is a separate, non-FDA-approved product.
It mimics GLP-1, a gut hormone that helps control appetite and blood sugar. Many people feel full sooner and stay satisfied longer, which can make it easier to eat less.
It varies. In the STEP 1 trial, average weight loss built up over 68 weeks with weekly doses that stepped up gradually. Appetite may change earlier, but we do not promise a timeline or a result.
The most common are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and constipation, often early on or when the dose rises. Less common risks include pancreatitis and gallbladder problems. Your provider reviews these with you before you start.
Weight often returns. In the STEP 1 follow-up, people who stopped regained on average 11.6 percentage points of the 17.3% they had lost within a year. We plan for the long term, with nutrition, activity and follow-up.
The FDA says compounded drugs are not FDA-approved and has reported dosing errors, some leading to hospitalization. Ask whether any semaglutide offered to you is FDA-approved or compounded and why.
People with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN 2, or a prior serious allergic reaction to semaglutide, should not take it. Tell your provider about pregnancy, pancreatitis, gallbladder problems and all medications.
Coverage varies by plan and by whether the medication is prescribed for weight or diabetes. We can provide a superbill for possible out-of-network reimbursement. See our payment options or call 480-752-7600.
