Understanding Long COVID (COVID Long Haul)

Fatigue, brain fog, exercise intolerance, dizziness, heart palpitations, sleep disturbances, headaches, and other symptoms may continue for months or longer after the initial illness. This condition is commonly referred to as Long COVID, post-COVID syndrome, or COVID long haul.

At Live Well Wellness Center in Chandler, Arizona, our physicians work with patients experiencing post-viral illness and complex chronic symptoms. Rather than focusing on one symptom at a time, we evaluate the patterns that may be contributing to persistent symptoms and create an individualized treatment plan.

Common Questions

Long COVID Q&A

Long COVID refers to new, returning, or persistent health problems that occur following a COVID-19 infection.

Symptoms can affect many different systems in the body, and the experience can vary dramatically between patients.

Some people recover from their initial infection but never feel completely well again. Others initially improve and then develop new symptoms weeks or months later.

Long COVID can cause a wide range of symptoms, including:

  • Severe or persistent fatigue
  • Post-exertional symptom worsening
  • Brain fog
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Memory problems
  • Headaches
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Heart palpitations or increased heart rate
  • Exercise intolerance
  • Shortness of breath
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Muscle or joint pain
  • Changes in taste or smell
  • Digestive symptoms
  • Anxiety or changes in mood
  • Temperature intolerance
  • New food or environmental sensitivities
  • Symptoms associated with dysautonomia or POTS

One of the most frustrating aspects of Long COVID is that routine laboratory testing may not fully explain why a patient continues to feel unwell.

Long COVID is complex, and there may not be one single explanation for every patient.

Depending on the individual, persistent symptoms may involve immune and inflammatory changes, autonomic nervous system dysfunction, post-viral changes, mast cell activation, mitochondrial or cellular energy dysfunction, nutrient deficiencies, hormonal or thyroid changes, sleep disruption, or other underlying conditions that became more apparent following the infection.

COVID may also act as a significant physiological stressor in someone who already had underlying vulnerabilities.

This is why we don't assume that every person with Long COVID needs exactly the same treatment.

At Live Well Wellness Center, evaluation begins with a detailed history of your health before, during, and after COVID.

Depending on your symptoms and history, testing may include:

  • Comprehensive blood work
  • Inflammatory markers
  • Nutritional markers
  • Thyroid and hormone evaluation
  • Evaluation for viral or other infectious contributors when clinically appropriate
  • Assessment for dysautonomia or POTS
  • Evaluation for mast cell or histamine-related symptoms
  • Evaluation of gastrointestinal health
  • Environmental exposure testing when indicated

Our goal is to identify patterns that may help explain why recovery has stalled and determine which areas should be prioritized first.

There is no universal treatment plan for Long COVID.

Treatment is individualized and may include:

  • Nutrition and lifestyle interventions
  • Pacing and individualized movement recommendations
  • Nutritional supplementation
  • Mitochondrial and cellular energy support
  • Immune and inflammatory support
  • Treatment strategies for mast cell activation when present
  • Support for dysautonomia or POTS
  • Hormone and thyroid optimization when indicated
  • Gut health support
  • Prescription medications when appropriate
  • IV nutrient therapy or other integrative therapies when appropriate for the individual patient

For patients with significant post-exertional symptom worsening, simply pushing harder or exercising more may not be the right starting point. Treatment should be based on the patient's current level of function and tolerance.

Recovery can look different for every patient. Because Long COVID can involve multiple systems, improvement often requires identifying and addressing several contributing factors rather than searching for one single abnormal lab result.
