Who tirzepatide may suit
FDA-approved weight management labeling generally covers adults with:
- A BMI of 30 or higher, or
- A BMI of 27 or higher with a weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol or type 2 diabetes
Tirzepatide is a once-weekly injection used for weight management. At Live Well, a naturopathic doctor screens your health first and decides with you whether it is appropriate, then supports you with nutrition and follow-up.

In SURMOUNT-1, adults without diabetes who took tirzepatide 15 mg lost an average of 20.9% of their body weight over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% on placebo. Everyone also received lifestyle support.
In SURMOUNT-5, an open-label head-to-head trial of 751 adults, tirzepatide led to greater average loss at 72 weeks than semaglutide, reported as 20.2% vs 13.7%.
In SURMOUNT-4, people who switched to placebo regained an average of 14.0% of their body weight, while those who stayed on treatment lost a further 5.5%.
These are trial averages. Many people lose less, stomach side effects are common, and results are never guaranteed.

Tirzepatide can help some people, and it carries real risks.
Nausea, diarrhea, vomiting and constipation are common, especially early on or when the dose goes up.
Pancreatitis, gallbladder problems, dehydration and kidney problems can occur. If you take insulin or diabetes pills, your blood sugar may drop.
In rats, tirzepatide caused thyroid C-cell tumors. It is not known whether it does in people. It should not be used with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN 2.
The FDA says compounded drugs are not FDA-approved. Never buy from sources that skip screening or send medicine that looks different than expected.

Tirzepatide is the active ingredient in both Mounjaro and Zepbound. Mounjaro is approved for type 2 diabetes, and Zepbound is approved for weight management and for sleep apnea in adults with obesity. Compounded tirzepatide is a separate, non-FDA-approved product.
Tirzepatide acts on two hormone pathways, GLP-1 and GIP, while semaglutide acts on GLP-1. In a head-to-head trial, average weight loss was greater with tirzepatide. Both cause similar stomach-related side effects, and the best choice depends on your health.
It mimics two gut hormones that help control appetite and blood sugar. Many people feel full sooner and stay satisfied longer, which can make it easier to eat less.
The most common are nausea, diarrhea, vomiting and constipation, often early on or when the dose rises. Less common risks include pancreatitis, gallbladder problems and dehydration. Your provider reviews these with you before you start.
Weight often returns. In the SURMOUNT-4 trial, people who switched to placebo regained an average of 14.0% of their body weight. We plan for the long term, with nutrition, activity and follow-up.
The FDA says compounded drugs are not FDA-approved and has reported dosing errors, some leading to hospitalization. Ask whether any tirzepatide offered to you is FDA-approved or compounded and why.
People with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN 2, or a prior serious allergic reaction to tirzepatide, should not take it. Tell your provider about pregnancy, pancreatitis, kidney or gallbladder problems and all medications.
Coverage varies by plan and by whether the medication is prescribed for weight or diabetes. We can provide a superbill for possible out-of-network reimbursement. See our payment options or call 480-752-7600.
